A way to think about a church’s mission
and the sustainability of the ministries of the community.
Pastor Mark Thompson preached on July 2, 2017 using the Biblical passage of Matthew 10:40-42. In reference to Jesus’ teachings, the missional currency of wellness was described. Jesus, throughout the Gospel stories we have inherited, discusses the Hebrew concept of Shalom. This is the peace of mind that comes from God and our faith in God. We can experience shalom most powerfully, Jesus says, when we pay attention to caring for humanity, even in the giving of a cup of water.
Rev. Eric Law, an Episcopal priest and noted author and teacher, describes the Currency of Gracious Leadership this way in his book, Holy Currencies, and through his work with the Kaleidoscope Institute (kscopeinstitute.org) in Los Angeles:
The state of being healthy physically, socially, economically, ecologically and spiritually within a church/ministry, the neighborhood, the town/city, nation or the earth, especially as the result of deliberate effort. Sustainable wellness requires regenerative and recirculatory flow of material, human, financial and natural resources.
